Moderator: Nancy Alvorez, WESH News

Nancy Alvarez is a bilingual journalist with more than twenty years on the anchor desk and in the field covering the biggest stories in the nation and in Central Florida in both English and Spanish.
She started her broadcast journalism career in the Orlando market in 2000 and has reported on various hurricanes, the Pulse nightclub massacre, and launches from the Space Coast. Alvarez was the first Central Florida reporter to travel to Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria, subsequently returning to the island multiple times to cover the damage and recovery efforts.

Alvarez is well-known for her work in the community. She works closely with many civic and charitable organizations including: Foundation for Orange County Public Schools, Junior Achievement of Central Florida, Latino Leadership, Hope Partnership in Osceola County, the Hope Community Center in Apopka and Libby's Legacy Breast Cancer Foundation.

In 2021, Alvarez became an advocate for the importance of cancer screenings after her own breast cancer diagnosis. Her message about early detection inspired numerous women to get mammograms at a time many had gone unchecked because of the pandemic.

A daughter of Cuban immigrants, Alvarez is originally from South Florida. She graduated from Florida Atlantic University with a bachelor's degree in Mass Communication/Media Studies. She has called Downtown Orlando home for more than two decades and lives there with her husband, two children and two dogs.

Randi Cohen Ballard
BRCA2 Previvor

Randi Cohen Ballard was born and raised in Orlando, Florida, where she learned early on that determination and optimism could take you anywhere. After graduating from Florida State University, she stepped into the financial world with Charles Schwab, quickly rising to become a trusted Financial Consultant. For more than 15 years, she managed over $350 million in client assets, guiding people toward their goals with expertise, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to their success.

When her first daughter was born, Randi embraced a new chapter as CEO of the Ballard household, channeling the same leadership and focus she once brought to Wall Street into building a thriving family life.

In 2017, a genetic test changed everything: Randi learned she carried the BRCA2 gene mutation, a discovery that forced a life-defining choice. She could watch and wait—or take bold action. Choosing courage over fear, she underwent a preventative double mastectomy and prophylactic hysterectomy, not because she was sick, but because she was determined to stay well for decades to come.

Randi’s journey is one of empowerment—of taking control of her health, making hard decisions from a place of strength, and living life on her own terms. Today, she shares her story to inspire others to face challenges head-on, to trust their instincts, and to choose a future fueled by hope, resilience, and love.
